We've been a bit obsessed with gingerbread around here lately - gingerbread printables, gingerbread decorating, and also gingerbread playdough!
This was probably the first Christmasy thing I did for the kids in late November, simply because it is so easy and they are entertained for ages and ages with playdough. Add some yummy smelling spices, a rolling pin, cookie cutters and buttons to the mix and they love it even more.
To make your gingerbread playdough I used my favourite cooked playdough recipe and added some cinnamon, ginger and cloves and it smells wonderful! {about a tsp of each} I also added some brown food colouring to get the lovely gingerbready colour.
Gingerbread Playdough:
1 cup of flour
1/2 cup of salt
1 cup of water
1 Tb cream of tartar
1 Tb cooking oil
1tsp each of ground cinnamon, ginger and clove
brown food coloring
Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan over low heat until it becomes thick. Remove from heat and allow to cool a little before giving it a good knead.
I find it helps A LOT if I use a whisk while the mix is still very liquidy at first, this helps to avoid lumps and to evenly disperse the colour.
Once cool I let the kids at it, and this time gave them buttons to help them decorate their gingerbread creations.
Is playdough a hit at your house? What other scents have you tried? We also love lavender and made peppermint last Christmas!

This looks great! I have such a problem with my boy eating the normal salty playdough though and can't imagine how much of this he'd sneak in lol!!
